You get a brilliant panorama of Trunk Butte from Schmacker Reservoir, and if you came for an overnight stay Spotted Tail Campground is a splendid location to camp. Around Schmacker Reservoir you don’t get a lot of precipitation; during the month of May you get the most rain around here while January is generally the driest month. All through the long summer days highs here at Schmacker Reservoir get into       the 90's while night lows are commonly in the 50's. High temperatures throughout the wintertime are normally in the 30's with temperatures at Schmacker Reservoir dipping down into the 10's during winter nights. If only every site had this much outdoors enjoyable things, what a great earth it would be. After a long day outdoors Super 8 Motel - Chadron is a magnificent spot to spend a night or two, and there is a wonderful hiking trail close by called the Rock                  Butte Loop. Camping is available at Roberts Trailhead Campground, and the Roberts Trail is a good hiking trail close by. This lake is so wonderful. Schmacker Dam is a pretty site close to Schmacker Reservoir; going for a hike on the Pine Ridge Trail is always a pleasant adventure.
