Mill Pond is glorious enough to spend more than a day at, Grandfather Campground and Cabins is a glorious local campground, and during your tour here you'll meet some folks from Boone for sure. This lake is so wonderful. Mill Pond gets a great deal of water; the month of May is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest month of the year is December. You just can't picture the amount of outdoors cool stuff the area in close proximity to Mill Pond has

| | to offer. Good hiking is available along the Daniel Boone Scout Trail; do put some time aside to spend at Buckeye Spring while you're here at Mill Pond. This lake is so wonderful. Very beautiful scenery and brilliant skiing is what you get at Hawksnest; Sugar Gap is close at hand, and is a wonderful site. Pond, and if you need a location to stay Beech Mountain Inns is a perfect choice. Hiking is a popular thing to do around Mill Pond; Yancey Ridge Trail is a pleasant local trail, and what would winter be without some skiing at
Sugar Mountain. And that's not all you can do here at Mill Pond. If you don't mind getting dripping wet, you can always go whitewater paddling on Elk River; a brilliant nearby hotel is Best Western Mountain Lodge At Banner Elk. Why
not take a refreshing hike along the Laurel Fork Trail, and what would a place like Mill Pond be without interesting close by highlights like Pinnacle of the Sugar. Through the warm days of summer, highs regularly are in the 70's
at Mill Pond; the overnight is a little colder of course, frequently in the 50's. Throughout the winter the highs are frequently in the 40's, and nighttime lows during the winter for Mill Pond tend to be in the 10's. This lake is
so wonderful. For you golfers we recommend close by Mountain Glen Golf Club; you're possibly interested in lakes, Inver Lochy Lake is one of those nearby. Camping at Down By The River Campground is always a perfect experience; a nice sight of beautiful Beech Mountain is available.

Laurel Fork Trail
 | 14 miles away 6 PHOTOS Not normally hikers, and middle aged, this trail was a killer. We had a great time, and the scenery was beautiful, but we were worn out. We ran into a copperhead, twice, once on the way up, and again on the way down. Apparently he was guarding his territory. The falls weren't as full as we hoped, but there has been a lack of rain in this area. The trail in some area's were a bit rough, steep, and dangerous, but at least we can say we made it.... |

We went in Sept. 05 and we basically had the campground to ourselves! Even if others were in the campground, the sites are spaced apart. Its a great getaway.... |
