Lake Lee

Two historic memories of Lake Lee were the Old Rock Store, owned originally by Thomas Braxton Winchester. It was on the left shortly before the fork (right road is 601 to Pageland). An old picture of the interior of the office portion of the store with Tom Winchester, reflects an Aeronautic Calendar on the wall, dated 1937. Tom lived in a 2-story brick house that once stood in the fork of the road, with his wife Sarah Rebecca Belk (of the prominent Jewish Belk
families including Belk Store Services), & his brother, Mark, & his wife, Rose, who was Becky's sister. Their children were; Marge, Lura & Paul Winchester. There were peach orchards, a cotton gin, horses, the rock store, & their AMC-Jeep
dealership. Often, gypsies would camp on their land. The house was later sold to Dolly Traywick, Randy Travis' aunt. Sadly, the house was later torn down. Marge married Kemp Price, of Price Dairies, Paul married Inez Thomas from Mint Hill, & Lura married Bynum Griffin, original founder of OK Used Cars, Griffin Motor Company- which he gave part ownership to his brother, Bruce, & Griffin Chevrolet, in which he gifted part ownership to his nephew Bruce Griffin, Jr,
after sending him to GM School. There are many old newspaper articles on Bynum & his car dealerships, & while many beg to differ in who started these companies, it, also, is in historical print. Later, Bynum traded Bruce Jr his interest
in Chevrolet for the Motor company interest, (both of which Bynum had given to him in the first place), and upon selling Griffin Chevrolet, invested heavily in Griffin Motor Company so that Bruce, Bruce Jr and their family could expand into several dealerships & locations today. Both Paul & Marge worked with the dealerships. Lake Lee was the beginning of Monroe's auto empires in that Tom had an AMC-Jeep dealership there, and had the first Western Auto in the area,
which was sold to the Fergusons. Lura met Bynum while working with her dad on a Saturday around 1937. They married shortly after meeting. Bynum learned part of his trade from Tom, his soon to be father-in-law. Says Anna Griffin
