Stay the night at Square Dance Center and Campground; nearby you come across the Mill Creek Trail which is a nice hiking trail. Carlton Lake is regularly a relatively dehydrated site; of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain, and the driest month of the year is October. Having a good time in the Bitterroot Range is painless. This lake is so wonderful. Carlton Lake is a good site to visit       for more than one day, Fort Fizzle Campground is a good site to camp nearby, and Lolo-Days Inn Missoula South/Blue Mountain is a great location to get some rest. You just can't imagine the amount of outdoors cool things the Bitterroot Range has to offer. If you come at the right time of year, Mill Creek offers some magnificent whitewater; after a long day outdoors Super 8 Motel - Missoula/Brooks Street is a good spot to spend a night or two. Carlton Lake is located                  in the Bitterroot Range. For the period of the summertime, highs regularly are in the 80's at Carlton Lake, and throughout summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 20's, and overnight lows in the 10's for Carlton Lake. You just can't envision the amount of outdoors entertaining things the area next to Carlton Lake has to offer. Float down the rapids of Kootenai Creek in a kayak, and you can go for a hike on the Sweeney Ridge Trail.
