Summertime at Harke Lake arrives with high temperatures in the 90's. For the duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures drop down into the 60's. During the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's while Harke Lake nighttime low temperatures during the wintertime are in the 10's. So many fun things in the Ozarks, just extraordinary. There's just no way somebody can get bored here at Harke Lake. Going for a hike along the Slabtown Bluff Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this vicinity,
and most likely you're looking for close by lakes? Sure, Slabtown Lake is just a very short distance away. Very good water scenery is available at Harke Lake Dam near Harke Lake; you'll meet a lot of people from Rolla here. While
you're here at Harke Lake you can take a hike along the Paddy Creek Trail, and Harke Lake is a great location to visit for more than one day, Big Piney Campground is a great location to camp nearby.

Kaintuck Trail

...ottom it looks like a large, deep cave through which light doesn't travel because of a bend in the tunnel. Follow the trail around the hill and you will find the other opening. Next time I will bring a flashlight so that I can explore a little.
The trails are popular with horseback riders and are as wide as sidewalks most of the time. In most places and the footing is good. A small percentage of the trail is made up of loose rock that can be bad for a weak ankle.
My only complaint is that the map I have is not accurate and the markers on the trees don't lend much confidence. Today I wound up walking an extra two hours because of a wrong turn. Looking at the Internet maps, I still can't find the path I was walking or the fenced meadows. In one spot the trail went through a chained gate. I didn't know if I would be trespassing so I turned right, followed a path around the field and found myself on some dirt road that is not marked. Maybe the next time the park service is out clearing fallen trees or doing their controlled burns they can tack up a few more trail s... |
