     Baxter Lake is a delightful spot to visit for more than one day, Hickory Haven Campground is a delightful spot to camp nearby; lakes are such peaceful places, why not check out Long Lake. For the duration of the long summer days at Baxter Lake highs are generally in the 80's while nighttime lows are usually in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 30's while the cold winter nights at Baxter Lake are in the 10's. From a rain point of view Baxter  
   Lake is a rather common spot; July is when you get the most rain here while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. You'll need more than a day to look at everything Baxter Lake has to offer, you can camp at Camp Hickory Haven, and if you're interested in hydro structures, you can visit Baxter Lake Dam.
And that's not all you can do here at Baxter Lake. Dry warm beds await you at Comfort Inn Canton, and float down the rapids of Cedar
 
               Creek in a kayak. This lake is so wonderful. Get soaked paddling on Bear Creek, and if you need a spot to stay Fairfield Inn Keokuk is a magnificent choice. Take a little trip to Doe Run since you're here at Baxter Lake; Buck-Doe Run Watershed Lake Number 25 is a pleasant lake close by.
Here at Baxter Lake you'll most likely meet some people from Quincy.

In response to keith's note. I've kayaked Cedar Creek several times. During heavy rain events the creek is VERY wild. And while yes it is bony, it's a fun ride.. especially since it's one of the only places to get above a class II ride around quincy. Additionally, DO NOT go to bear creek unless you plan on doing some flat water near where it meets the mississippi river. Any further upstream and you'll be dealing with hostile landowners who aren't aware of the navigability laws in illinois. You'll probably be met by a sherrif on the take out. See uploaded picture of cedar creek a couple of years ago....
