Going for a hike on the Height of Land Portage is always a nice adventure, and if you get bored of Whale Lake you could also pop by close by Belly Lake. This lake is so wonderful. Hand Creek is a lovely stream that is worth checking out. You feel that's enough? Just getting warmed up. Why not camp at Cascade River Campground if you're here at Whale Lake, and a wonderful close by hotel is Super 8 Grand Marais. Vireo Lake is a nearby lake that you could pop by,

This lake is so wonderful. Soar down the rapids of Cascade River in a kayak, and the best way to spend a winter day is on the slopes of close by Lutsen. Whale Lake gets a typical amount of annual precipitation; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain, and February is when it's the driest. Throughout the summertime at Whale Lake highs are regularly in the 70's. Once the sun is down it sinks down to the 50's. For the duration of the winter the
highs are generally in the 10's, and after the sun is down throughout the winter temperatures at Whale Lake plunge into the-10's. If you came for an overnight stay Devil Lake Campground is a good site to camp; there are good locations to look at along the South Lake Portage.

 | I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
