Whale Lake is a great lake in an area with lots of outdoors fun all around. Don't leave Whale Lake without first going for a hike along the North Shore State Trail, and Caribou Highlands Lodge is a great place to get some rest. If you need a spot to stay Super 8 Motel - Grand Marais is a glorious choice, and there's perfect hiking along the South Lake Portage. This lake is so wonderful. | | Whale Lake you'll hit upon Vireo Lake which is a lovely lake.
Through the summertime at Whale Lake highs are usually in the 70's. During the dark hours of summer temperatures fall down into the 50's. During the wintertime the highs are usually in the 10's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Whale Lake fall into the-10's. strap some skis to your feet. This lake is so wonderful. Stay the night at Devil Lake Campground.
The yearly rain here at Whale Lake is about average; the month with most of the rain is August, and February is the month with the
least moisture. Not sufficient hours in a day to enjoy this location. It's a good idea to stop by Hand Creek, it's close to Whale Lake, and Whale Lake is a wonderful spot to visit for more than one day, Cascade River Campground is
a wonderful spot to camp nearby. Good hiking is available along the Height of Land Portage, and a delightful location for whitewater paddling is Cascade River.

 | I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
