It's always fun to stop by West Pope Lake. There is a great hiking trail in the vicinity of West Pope Lake called the Stairway Portage, and a charming lake like Iron Lake is a glorious site to stop at. West Pope Lake gets a normal amount of annual rain; August is the wettest month with most rain, and February is when it's the driest. This lake is so wonderful. You'll need more than a day to explore everything West Pope Lake has to offer, you can camp at Gunflint
Pines, and if the weather is wonderful, you can go for a hike along the Height of Land Portage.
On a nice day at West Pope Lake you can take a hike along the South Lake Portage, and you'll hit upon a scenic lake called Whisker Lake. You'll never forgive yourself if you don’t go skiing at Lutsen if you're here, and if you come at the right time of year, Cascade River offers some brilliant whitewater. And that's not all you can do here at West Pope Lake.

Stay the night at Gateway-hungry Jack Lodge; don't forget to stop by Frances Bay since you're here.
Whitewater paddling is not for everyone but if it's for you then we recommend Cascade River. All through the summer months at West Pope Lake temperatures are regularly in the 70's. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 50's. The winter comes with highs in the 10's; overnight lows at West Pope Lake through the wintertime generally descend into the-10's.

I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf...
