What a nice lake Vireo Lake is. This lake is so wonderful. Stay the night at Cascade River Campground. From a rainfall point of view Vireo Lake is a reasonably normal place; during the month of August you get the most rain around here, and February is the month with the least moisture. If the weather is splendid here at Vireo Lake, you can go for a hike along the South Lake Portage; Lutsen is a very popular ski area around here.

For the period of the months of summer here at Vireo Lake, high temperatures commonly reach the 70's, and the overnight is slightly cooler of course, typically in the 50's. For the duration of the winter the highs are mostly in the 10's with temperatures at Vireo Lake dipping down into the-10's all through winter nights. If you need a place to stay Super 8 Motel - Grand Marais is a perfect choice, and on a glorious day you can take a hike along the Height of Land Portage.
A good nearby hotel is East Bay Suites; there's whitewater on Cascade River
for all you thrill seekers. This lake is so wonderful. Hand Creek is a beautiful stream that is worth stopping at, and Whale Lake is a great lake nearby. There's so much to do here at Vireo Lake that you need to camp here for a while, Devil Lake Campground is a good spot for that, and at Vireo Lake you can make out Eagle Mountain.

 | Echo is a nice lake to stop and drop a line when in the Schroeder tofte area. It is just up the road from Nine mile lake campground and has an easy to catch supply of small trout.  | I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
