     If you need a place to stay The Mountain Inn is a good choice; Poplar River Campground is a good campground nearby. This lake is so wonderful. Going for a hike along the Rib Lake Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this neighborhood. You'll stumble on a pretty lake called Roast Lake near Vat Lake, and why not stop by close by Mistletoe Creek while you're here at Vat Lake. Whitewater paddling is not for everyone but if it's for you then we recommend  
   Cascade River, and the snow is good at Lutsen.
An average amount of rainfall falls at Vat Lake; August is when you get the most rain here, and the driest month of the year is February. And if that's not sufficient, there's lots more to do close to Vat Lake. Stay the night at Crescent Lake Campground, and hiking along the Honeymoon Trail is perfect fun. High temperatures at Vat Lake during the long summer days are in the 70's with night lows in the 50's.
 
               For the duration of the winter highs are in the 10's, and overnight lows in the-10's for Vat Lake.
This lake is so wonderful. There are some perfect whitewater spots on Poplar River, and a beautiful lake like Mistletoe Lake is a pleasant place to take a look at. Dry warm beds await you at Eagle Ridge Resort at Lutsen Mountains; you can have a great hiking adventure along the North Shore State Trail.

Two Island Lake Campground

I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf...
