Beautiful Swamper Lake has much to offer visitors. You absolutely must love Swamper Lake. Whitewater paddling is good on Devil Track River, and while you're here you can take a hike along the South Lake Portage. Camping is available at East Bearskin Campground, and if you came for an overnight stay Gateway-hungry Jack Lodge is a good site to camp. The yearly rain here at Swamper Lake is about average; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain,

| | and February on the other hand is the driest.
For the duration of the summer here at Swamper Lake, high temperatures mostly get into the 70's while nighttime lows are commonly in the 50's. All through the winter the highs are regularly in the 10's with temperatures at Swamper Lake dipping down into the-10's through winter nights. This lake is so wonderful. Inn And Suites is a pleasant choice. If you don’t have a problem getting dripping wet, you can always go whitewater paddling on Devil Track River, and Trap Lake is a tremendous lake close by.
Have a great hiking adventure along
the Stairway Portage, and dry warm beds await you at Super 8 Motel - Grand Marais. This lake is so wonderful. Hiking along the Long Portage is glorious fun; there are other sites here than Swamper Lake, for example Locket Lake.

Two Island Lake Campground
 | I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
Trout Lake

Trout Lake approx 14 Northwest of Grand Marais,MN and then 4 miles east on #140 (Trout Lake Road)to the lake. Mink and Kimball lakes are also accessed by this road. BOATERS BEWARE - the public landing is a ''carry in landing'' meaning no trailered launches here. If you prefer you can launch at Trout Lake Resort for a fee of $5 to $10 but their landing is shallow as well and very rocky. NO BIG BOATS can get in and that's the way the folks at the resort like it. A boat with a ten h.p. will do the trick. In fact the folks at Trout Lake Resort will rent you one if they are not reserved by the resort guests for ~$35 for 1/2 day. The like is super clear and boasts lake trout and rainbows. We caught one rainbow on a lazy fishing/swimming expedition and another boat on the lake caught a small laker and one rainbow. This lake would be real fun for trout in the spring when they are near the surface but they can be found by trolling in 20 to 30' along the shore lines in late summer as well as the deeper spots.... |

Echo is a nice lake to stop and drop a line when in the Schroeder tofte area. It is just up the road from Nine mile lake campground and has an easy to catch supply of small trout.
