South Lake is a nice lake to visit. This lake is so wonderful. Camping is available at East Bearskin Campground, and splendid hiking is available along the Height of Land Portage. During the summer here at South Lake, high temperatures generally get into the 70's, and all through the night it cools down to the 50's. Daytime highs during the winter are in the 10's, and through the dark hours in the winter at South Lake temperatures drop to the-10's. South Lake gets

Hiking is a popular thing to do around South Lake; Stairway Portage is a perfect local trail, and after a long day outdoors Super 8 Motel - Grand Marais is a magnificent place to spend a night or two.  | Echo is a nice lake to stop and drop a line when in the Schroeder tofte area. It is just up the road from Nine mile lake campground and has an easy to catch supply of small trout. I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
