Going for a hike on the Stairway Portage is always a great adventure. Lakes? Sure, Daniels Lake is in close proximity. Good hiking is available along the South Lake Portage, and Rose Lake is good enough to spend more than a day at, Gateway-hungry Jack Lodge is a good local campground. You just can't imagine the amount of outdoors amusing stuff the area near Rose Lake has to offer. There are some glorious whitewater spots on Devil Track River; a great close by

| | hotel is Super 8 Grand Marais. At Rose Lake all through the warmest time of the year highs are in the 70's, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. High temperatures during the wintertime are normally in the 10's with winter lows in the-10's overnight here at Rose Lake.

wonderful site to camp here at Rose Lake is East Bearskin Campground. Rose Lake is a good location of normal rain; August is the month that gets the most rain, and February meanwhile is the driest month.
Whitewater paddling is
not for everybody but if it's for you then we recommend Cascade River, and you can go for a hike on the Long Portage.

Two Island Lake Campground

I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |

Echo is a nice lake to stop and drop a line when in the Schroeder tofte area. It is just up the road from Nine mile lake campground and has an easy to catch supply of small trout.
