Cascade River is a magnificent whitewater spot next to Rat Lake, and the best way to spend a winter day is on the slopes of close by Lutsen. Good hiking is available along the South Lake Portage. If you came to camp East Bearskin Campground is a brilliant place to do that, and a wonderful nearby hotel is Super 8 Grand Marais. Summertime highs at Rat Lake regularly tend to be in the 70's, and all through summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. The wintertime

There's so much to do here at Rat Lake that you need to camp here for a while, Gateway-hungry Jack Lodge is a good place for that, and there's good hiking along the Stairway Portage. This lake is so wonderful. Do pop by East Otter Lake right next door to Rat Lake, it's a wonderful lake, and hiking is a popular thing to do around Rat Lake; | |

I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
