There's brilliant hiking along the Long Portage, and Timber Creek is in the neighborhood of Pickerel Lake and is always a diversion to stop at. This lake is so wonderful. Pickerel Lake is brilliant enough to spend more than a day at, Grand Marais Recreation Area is a brilliant local campground, and if you need a place to stay Best Western Superior Inn & Suites is a great choice. | | of the year is usually September, that's the one that rains the most, and February on the other hand is the driest. During the warm days of summer highs here at Pickerel Lake reach the 70's, and during the night it cools down to the 50's. All through the winter this place gets highs in the 20's, and nighttime lows at Pickerel Lake throughout the winter usually plunge into the 0's. by hotel is East Bay Suites, and hiking is a popular thing to do around Pickerel Lake; Lesser Cherry Portage is a tremendous local trail. Lakes are such peaceful places, why not explore Elbow Lake in the vicinity of Pickerel Lake,
and Devil Track River is a good whitewater spot nearby. This lake is so wonderful. There's so much to do here at Pickerel Lake that you need to camp here for a while, Kimball Lake Campground is a brilliant place for that, and
the Vaseux Portage offers hiking at its best. There are other spots here than Pickerel Lake, for example Makada Lake; why not spend some time golfing at a nearby golf course like Gunflint Hills Golf Course.

Trout Lake
 | Trout Lake approx 14 Northwest of Grand Marais,MN and then 4 miles east on #140 (Trout Lake Road)to the lake. Mink and Kimball lakes are also accessed by this road. BOATERS BEWARE - the public landing is a ''carry in landing'' meaning no trailered launches here. If you prefer you can launch at Trout Lake Resort for a fee of $5 to $10 but their landing is shallow as well and very rocky. NO BIG BOATS can get in and that's the way the folks at the resort like it. A boat with a ten h.p. will do the trick. In fact the folks at Trout Lake Resort will rent you one if they are not reserved by the resort guests for ~$35 for 1/2 day. The like is super clear and boasts lake trout and rainbows. We caught one rainbow on a lazy fishing/swimming expedition and another boat on the lake caught a small laker and one rainbow. This lake would be real fun for trout in the spring when they are near the surface but they can be found by trolling in 20 to 30' along the shore lines in late summer as well as the deeper spots.... |
Two Island Lake Campground
 | 11 miles away I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
