North Lake is always a pleasure to visit. Hiking along the South Lake Portage is nice fun, and Gateway-hungry Jack Lodge is a great local campground. East Bearskin Campground is a glorious campground nearby, and if you're here you can take a hike along the Stairway Portage.
Nearby lakes? Sure, Mucker Lake is near North Lake, and get yourself into a kayak and hit Cascade River. From a rainfall point of view North Lake is a rather typical site; the month

| | of August is the wettest with most of the rain, and February is when it's the driest. This lake is so wonderful. This is a good region for people who like lakes. Dunn Lake is a lake around here; a pleasant close by hotel is Super 8 Motel - Grand Marais.
Just can't get enough of North Lake. Going for a hike along the Height of Land Portage will let you absorb the natural beauty of this region, and there are some great whitewater spots on Cascade River. | |

Summertime highs at North Lake ordinarily tend to be in the 70's, and all through the night it cools down to the 50's. Throughout the winter highs are in the 10's with temperatures at North Lake dipping down into the-10's all through winter nights.

 | Echo is a nice lake to stop and drop a line when in the Schroeder tofte area. It is just up the road from Nine mile lake campground and has an easy to catch supply of small trout. I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
