A striking lake like Little John Lake near McFarland Lake is a brilliant place to check out, and hiking along the Great Cherry Portage is brilliant fun. Summertime highs at McFarland Lake generally tend to be in the 70's. Summer night lows sink down to the 50's. For the period of the winter highs are generally in the 20's, and all through the dark hours in the wintertime at McFarland Lake temperatures drop to the 0's. This lake is so wonderful. Lakes are

Trout Lake

Trout Lake approx 14 Northwest of Grand Marais,MN and then 4 miles east on #140 (Trout Lake Road)to the lake. Mink and Kimball lakes are also accessed by this road. BOATERS BEWARE - the public landing is a ''carry in landing'' meaning no trailered launches here. If you prefer you can launch at Trout Lake Resort for a fee of $5 to $10 but their landing is shallow as well and very rocky. NO BIG BOATS can get in and that's the way the folks at the resort like it. A boat with a ten h.p. will do the trick. In fact the folks at Trout Lake Resort will rent you one if they are not reserved by the resort guests for ~$35 for 1/2 day. The like is super clear and boasts lake trout and rainbows. We caught one rainbow on a lazy fishing/swimming expedition and another boat on the lake caught a small laker and one rainbow. This lake would be real fun for trout in the spring when they are near the surface but they can be found by trolling in 20 to 30' along the shore lines in late summer as well as the deeper spots.... |
