If you are traveling by, why not stop by Mayhew Lake. Mayhew Lake is a good spot of common rainfall; most of the rain falls through August, and February is when it's the driest. Head up to Lutsen and strap some skis to your feet, and Mayhew Lake is not the only place nearby, Portage Lake is a nearby lake. There is a glorious hiking trail in close proximity to Mayhew Lake called the South Lake Portage; camping at Gateway-hungry Jack Lodge is always a good experience.

| | If you get bored of Mayhew Lake, you could also explore close by East Pope Lake. A delightful location to camp here at Mayhew Lake is Cascade River Campground, and Frances Bay is relatively close. During the warmest time of the year at Mayhew Lake highs are frequently in the 70's with overnight lows in the 50's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 10's with temperatures at Mayhew Lake dipping down into the-10's throughout winter nights.

to Mayhew Lake for a good time. The Height of Land Portage is a perfect hiking trail near Mayhew Lake, and in the event that you don't mind getting wet, you can always go whitewater paddling on Cascade River. This lake is so wonderful.
Going for a hike on the Stairway Portage is always a great adventure, and Cascade River is a great whitewater spot nearby.

I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
