Lakes are such peaceful sites, why not explore Pine Mountain Lake right next door to Elbow Lake, and don't leave Elbow Lake without first going for a hike along the Stairway Portage. You'll find a lovely lake called Makada Lake near Elbow Lake; Elbow Lake is perfect enough to spend more than a day at, Grand Marais Recreation Area is a perfect local campground. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy this place. There's great hiking along the Lesser Cherry Portage,

| | and if you need a site to stay Best Western Superior Inn & Suites is a good choice. Summer brings highs in the 70's to Elbow Lake. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 50's. Daytime highs throughout the winter are in the 10's with temperatures at Elbow Lake dipping down into the-10's during winter nights.
This lake is so wonderful. There are splendid places to look at along the Long Portage, and swing by Mud Creek it's a good place to go to. This lake | |

is so wonderful. Whitewater paddling is great on Devil Track River, and a great site to camp here at Elbow Lake is Go-fer Cabins Trailer Court.
From a precipitation point of view Elbow Lake is a quite typical location; the month
with most of the rain is August while February is regularly the driest month. East Bay Suites is a great spot to get some rest; if you're a golfer then a nice nearby course is Gunflint Hills Golf Course.

Trout Lake
 | Trout Lake approx 14 Northwest of Grand Marais,MN and then 4 miles east on #140 (Trout Lake Road)to the lake. Mink and Kimball lakes are also accessed by this road. BOATERS BEWARE - the public landing is a ''carry in landing'' meaning no trailered launches here. If you prefer you can launch at Trout Lake Resort for a fee of $5 to $10 but their landing is shallow as well and very rocky. NO BIG BOATS can get in and that's the way the folks at the resort like it. A boat with a ten h.p. will do the trick. In fact the folks at Trout Lake Resort will rent you one if they are not reserved by the resort guests for ~$35 for 1/2 day. The like is super clear and boasts lake trout and rainbows. We caught one rainbow on a lazy fishing/swimming expedition and another boat on the lake caught a small laker and one rainbow. This lake would be real fun for trout in the spring when they are near the surface but they can be found by trolling in 20 to 30' along the shore lines in late summer as well as the deeper spots.... |
Two Island Lake Campground

I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
