Why not stop by Deer Lake if you're passing through these parts. Having a great time at Deer Lake is easy. Not far from Deer Lake, you'll come across Moon Lake which is a wonderful lake, and a perfect close by hotel is Best Western Superior Inn And Suites. | | do here at Deer Lake that you need to camp here for a while, Gateway-hungry Jack Lodge is a magnificent place for that, and there is a great hiking trail nearby called the Long Portage.
There are great places to discover along the South Lake Portage; there are some wonderful whitewater spots on Devil Track River. There are other sites here than Deer Lake, for example Caribou Lake. You'll need more than a day to look at everything Deer Lake has to offer, | |

Deer Lake gets a typical amount of yearly rain; during the month of August you get the most rain around here, and the driest of the months is February. For the period of the warm days
of summer, highs regularly are in the 70's at Deer Lake. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures fall down into the 50's. High temperatures all through the winter are normally in the 10's, and nighttime lows during the winter for Deer Lake tend to be in the-10's.

Two Island Lake Campground

I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
Trout Lake

Trout Lake approx 14 Northwest of Grand Marais,MN and then 4 miles east on #140 (Trout Lake Road)to the lake. Mink and Kimball lakes are also accessed by this road. BOATERS BEWARE - the public landing is a ''carry in landing'' meaning no trailered launches here. If you prefer you can launch at Trout Lake Resort for a fee of $5 to $10 but their landing is shallow as well and very rocky. NO BIG BOATS can get in and that's the way the folks at the resort like it. A boat with a ten h.p. will do the trick. In fact the folks at Trout Lake Resort will rent you one if they are not reserved by the resort guests for ~$35 for 1/2 day. The like is super clear and boasts lake trout and rainbows. We caught one rainbow on a lazy fishing/swimming expedition and another boat on the lake caught a small laker and one rainbow. This lake would be real fun for trout in the spring when they are near the surface but they can be found by trolling in 20 to 30' along the shore lines in late summer as well as the deeper spots.... |

Echo is a nice lake to stop and drop a line when in the Schroeder tofte area. It is just up the road from Nine mile lake campground and has an easy to catch supply of small trout.
