Take a hike on the Stairway Portage, and Bow Lake is a perfect spot to visit for more than one day, Gateway-hungry Jack Lodge is a perfect spot to camp nearby. But wait, there's more to do in close proximity to Bow Lake. You're almost certainly interested in lakes, Nighthawk Lake is one of those nearby; you can have a magnificent hiking adventure along the Long Portage. All through the days of summer, highs typically are in the 70's at Bow Lake, and during the

| | night it cools down to the 50's. During the wintertime this place gets highs in the 10's, and all through the dark hours in the wintertime at Bow Lake temperatures sink to the-10's. Soar down the rapids of Cascade River in a kayak, and since you're here you can take a hike along the South Lake Portage.

Campground, and Super 8 Grand Marais is a great place to get some rest. Poplar Creek flows through this neighborhood; after a long day outdoors Best Western Superior Inn & Suites is a good location to spend a night or two.

for something in the neighborhood of Bow Lake? Quiver Lake is close by, and get dripping wet paddling on Devil Track River. Bow Lake gets a common amount of annual rain; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest month of the year is February.

Two Island Lake Campground
 | I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |

Echo is a nice lake to stop and drop a line when in the Schroeder tofte area. It is just up the road from Nine mile lake campground and has an easy to catch supply of small trout. Trout Lake

Trout Lake approx 14 Northwest of Grand Marais,MN and then 4 miles east on #140 (Trout Lake Road)to the lake. Mink and Kimball lakes are also accessed by this road. BOATERS BEWARE - the public landing is a ''carry in landing'' meaning no trailered launches here. If you prefer you can launch at Trout Lake Resort for a fee of $5 to $10 but their landing is shallow as well and very rocky. NO BIG BOATS can get in and that's the way the folks at the resort like it. A boat with a ten h.p. will do the trick. In fact the folks at Trout Lake Resort will rent you one if they are not reserved by the resort guests for ~$35 for 1/2 day. The like is super clear and boasts lake trout and rainbows. We caught one rainbow on a lazy fishing/swimming expedition and another boat on the lake caught a small laker and one rainbow. This lake would be real fun for trout in the spring when they are near the surface but they can be found by trolling in 20 to 30' along the shore lines in late summer as well as the deeper spots.... |
