Go to Aspen Lake if you want to go to a nice lake. In the event that you don't mind getting drenched, you can always go whitewater paddling on Devil Track River, and Aspen Lake is right by the Long Portage. Dry warm beds await you at Best Western Superior Inn And Suites, and while you're here, you could also have a look at charming Shoko Lake. This lake is so wonderful. Through the wintertime highs are regularly in the 10's while Aspen Lake nighttime low temperatures throughout the winter are in the-10's. Life's too short to enjoy all the fun stuff close to Aspen Lake. You'll hit upon a lovely lake called Wampus Lake near Aspen Lake, and Gateway-hungry Jack Lodge is a glorious campground nearby. is a good place of typical precipitation; through August this area sees the most rain, and the driest month is February. This lake is so wonderful. Poplar Creek is a tremendous local stream, and hiking along the South Lake Portage
is tremendous fun. East Bearskin Campground is a fine local campground, and Devil Track River has a good whitewater paddling spot nearby. After a long day outdoors Super 8 Motel - Grand Marais is a great location to spend a night or two, and do take a hike on the Stairway Portage.

Two Island Lake Campground
 | I have only been there in the winter waiting for the mushers to come through (for the Beargease Marathon), it is where I want my ashes to be. I missed one year of the Beargrease race (1998) but the next year I was there at Two Island it was a full moon and it was snowing at the same time, could see down the trail like it was daylight but it was snowing....that was my sign...like I didn't fall in love with it before...this is a beautiful place, small camground but nice in the summer. jkf... |
Echo Lake
 | 14 miles away Echo is a nice lake to stop and drop a line when in the Schroeder tofte area. It is just up the road from Nine mile lake campground and has an easy to catch supply of small trout. Trout Lake
 | 18 miles away Trout Lake approx 14 Northwest of Grand Marais,MN and then 4 miles east on #140 (Trout Lake Road)to the lake. Mink and Kimball lakes are also accessed by this road. BOATERS BEWARE - the public landing is a ''carry in landing'' meaning no trailered launches here. If you prefer you can launch at Trout Lake Resort for a fee of $5 to $10 but their landing is shallow as well and very rocky. NO BIG BOATS can get in and that's the way the folks at the resort like it. A boat with a ten h.p. will do the trick. In fact the folks at Trout Lake Resort will rent you one if they are not reserved by the resort guests for ~$35 for 1/2 day. The like is super clear and boasts lake trout and rainbows. We caught one rainbow on a lazy fishing/swimming expedition and another boat on the lake caught a small laker and one rainbow. This lake would be real fun for trout in the spring when they are near the surface but they can be found by trolling in 20 to 30' along the shore lines in late summer as well as the deeper spots.... |
