    Portage Lake is a lake worth visiting. The amount of rainfall that falls at Portage Lake is close to the national average; of all the months in a year January is the one with the most snow; the driest of the months is April. Near Portage Lake you hit upon the Pelkie Creek Hunter Walking Trails which is a fine hiking trail; after a long day outdoors Houghton Super 8 Motel is a nice place to spend a night or two. This lake is so wonderful. If you're here at  
   Portage Lake and you like golf, you can visit Michigan Technological University Golf Course, and unsurprisingly Denton Creek flows through this vicinity.
During the long summer days at Portage Lake highs are mostly in the 70's. Through the dark hours of summer temperatures drop down into the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 20's with winter lows in the 0's overnight here at Portage Lake. Since you might be in a lake visiting mood
 
               you can always pop by nearby Huron Lake, and get yourself into a kayak and hit Gratiot River. Portage Lake is glorious enough to spend more than a day at, Hancock Recreation Area is a glorious local campground. Lakes are great; Boston Lake is a lake that's in the neighborhood of Portage Lake.
This lake is so wonderful. A tour to Isle Royale National Park is recommended; if you come at the right time of year, Falls River offers some splendid whitewater. Budget Host Inn Houghton is a pleasant site to get some rest, and do schedule some time to go to Grosse Point if you have a chance.
Man, is there a heap of cool things to do in the neighborhood of Portage Lake. A brilliant location to camp here at Portage Lake is Sunset Bay RV Resort; you're sure to come across some nice folks from Houghton here.
