Island Lake
13 miles away
I have fished this lake for bluegills and have had great success. Some of the bluegills were 9 1/2 inches long. The water is very clear requiring 2 to 4 pound test line. Use half crawler with a small hook, #6, with a small split shot or at times no weight. Fish the deeper water by drifting until you find the fish then anchor. There are largemouth bass in this lake but they run undersize at around 11 to 12 inches. I used an electric motor to get around. The lake is small enough that you can row with your oars. During the spawning season, mid June, I fished the shoreline around the lake and caught the gills on their spawning beds. I have limited out many days fishing this lake with some nice size bluegills. I hand launched a boat at the camp ground there which charges a daily fee and parked in the parking lot....

They have modern showers, toilets, and electrical and water hookup on each site! then theres the motocross track (theres three of varying difficulties, mini, intermediate, and the big track) which is well groomed, as well as the private trail system on 175 acres. There is also the state orv and snowmobile trails very nearby. You can also ride legally on the county roads. Awesome place, Awesome ride. Check them out at Ogemawsportandtrail.com ...

Elni Lake
15 miles away
...here Clear Lake and Elni meet (swamp is on eastern side). The swamp is filled with cedars and the typical Michigan forest trees - Norway (Red) Pine, White Pine, Quaking Aspen (poplar), Birch, Jack Pine. Elni has plenty of lilypads and is only a so-so fishing lake. Much of the reason for that is that the bottom is very shallow (can freeze to the bottom and kill major populations of fish). Near the swamp, it is sometimes only inches deep and most boats cannot navigate ''the cove'' in the NE corner of the lake. The bottom appears to have a loose mud texture and is, therefore, easily disturbed. But, there is more to that story...

It is a fun lake for story-telling because it has as its bottom several feet of sawdust, which when merged with the natural sand and dirt compounds finds itself much like quicksand. At the top of that bottom layer (sawdust, mostly) is the volatile, easily disturbed, mystery muck. Hence, there isn't a beach on Elni. If you wonder about the veracity of my ''quicksand'' reference, take a good, thick stick (we used young poplars stripped of leaves, etc., to p...

I was just at Cranberry Lake on July 7, 2007. It was beautiful. I went fishing and caught many fish. I also went jet sking, paddle-boating, on a pontoon boat and fished off the dock. The view was amaizing, espcially the sunset. I loved it here and can't wait to come back....
