Elni Lake
| 13 miles away ...orted that. Maybe it's changed? Elni is calm, with a greenish tint to the water. There is a swamp at the side opposite where Clear Lake and Elni meet (swamp is on eastern side). The swamp is filled with cedars and the typical Michigan forest trees - Norway (Red) Pine, White Pine, Quaking Aspen (poplar), Birch, Jack Pine. Elni has plenty of lilypads and is only a so-so fishing lake. Much of the reason for that is that the bottom is very shallow (can freeze to the bottom and kill major populations of fish). Near the swamp, it is sometimes only inches deep and most boats cannot navigate ''the cove'' in the NE corner of the lake. The bottom appears to have a loose mud texture and is, therefore, easily disturbed. But, there is more to that story... It is a fun lake for story-telling because it has as its bottom several feet of sawdust, which when merged with the natural sand and dirt compounds finds itself much like quicksand. Wixom Lake offers fun for all ages all year round. Some of the homes have fantastic sandy beaches for swimming in the summer. Ice fishing and snowmobiling for winter fun! The Gladwin County Ice Carnival used to be held on the lake, many years ago, partly for safety reasons, the carnival was moved onto land across the road from where is had been held on the water. There are mud bogs and truck pulls and racing. There is also a lot of state land near the Wixom Lake area. It's a great area, whether you live here year round or just come to visit!... |

| 16 miles away I spend most of my summer weekends at ostc and its a great area for any kind of orv use. They have modern showers, toilets, and electrical and water hookup on each site! then theres the motocross track (theres three of varying difficulties, mini, intermediate,and the big track) which is well groomed, as well as the private trail system on 175 acres. | 17 miles away The person below is way off... The weeds are not that bad and I have caught some relatively nice sized fish. I have never had to clean off my motor and I catch lots of fish in little time. I would not mind if you went to another lake so that I can have more fish but there is nothing wrong with this lake....This Lake is weedy and all we caught were small pan fish. Every cast was weeds. We tried to still fish and still got weeds. Our Motor also was constantly needing clean up. We have a 5 hp motor , that's all they allow, and we get weeds,weeds,weeds. There was only 2 boats we saw fishing, they said the same thing. Good luck. Go to another lake...... |
