White Birches Campground
We went there in September, but, it seemed like an ideal, quiet place for hikers who may want to get off the beaten track on a very commercial island. The showers were clean, the sites were clean and it was not the most expensive. Forewarned, the shuttle bus doesn't go there, price to pay for remoteness....

Beech Mountain West Ridge Trail
... but short. The trailhead is off of an un-named dead-end dirt road that runs north off of Lavery Spring Road, another dirt road that terminates at the lower east shore of Long Pond.

The trail descends immediately from the little dirt road cul-de-sac to a little stream. After this brief 50-yard descent, it's all uphill, and steep to boot. The hiker is rewarded with views towards Long pond below to the west and Mansell Mountain beyond as he/she ascends. The views tend to get better as you go higher (imagine that?), although the trail alternates between wooded and fairly open rock, meaning that the good views are sporadic.

After 6/10 of a mile you'll come to a trail intersection. The Beach Mountain Loop trail heads left (north) towards the parking area off of Beech Hill Road. You'll want to go to the right/straight, where you can make the final 1/10 of a mile push to the summit of Beech.

The last 1/10 of a mile is pretty easy going, compared to the ascent to this point. With about 100 yards to go you'll come across a small structure on your right that looks to be th...

Sargent Mountain Trail
... Harbor itself presented themselves for almost the entire 45 minutes. At about 5/10 of a mile the trail leveled off temporarily on a large, open ridge, giving me a much needed breather before the final 0. 15 mile push to the top.

On top, Ithe hiker will discover a very large, wide open rocky summit with commanding views in all directions. To date, this is the best view I've had in Acadia National Park. The vista over Bar Harbor is remarkable, with the group of the four Porcupine Islands being promiment. The northern portion of Eagle Lake also presents itself nicely, as does the northern reaches of Somes Sound amd the Atantic Ocean to the north. The great bulks of Cadillac Mountain and Pemetic Mountain dominate the views to the east. The view from Sargent also made it easy to spot the next three peaks on my day's hike; Gilmore, Parkman and Bald. In fact, I was able to knock off these three bare-topped, wonderful little peaks and get back to my bike in only 2. 4 miles of hiking.

I would highly recommend Sargent Mountain. There are several approaches to this mountain (the ...
