West Pond
17 miles away West Pond is a truly special place, in the foothils of Mr. Washington. As you approach the pond from the South on Rt. 160, you are met by a breathtaking view of Mt. Washington which is 40 miles away. The water in west pond is crystal clear, and you can often hear the loons. There is a large area around the pond that is protected in tree growth, so the pond will never face additional stress of building. There is also no public access for boats, and that keeps it quiet and free of the kind of noise and congestion you see in popular lakes elsewhere....

Cranmore Mountain
18 miles away I have skied at Cranmore many times. The Mountain isn't huge, but has a good 1,200 vertical drop. There is plenty of trails for everyone, including a nice, long beginner run from the summit to the base. Cranmore has lots of steep runs too! The best thing ...
Shelburne Trail
19 miles away Beautiful trail, mostly easy grades. Lots of running water and a few hidden waterfalls along parts of the trail. You hear no traffic, almost no jets, just the sound of wild land around you. There is a nice campsite in a hemlock grove at the height of land, at the intersection of the Kenduskeag Trail. An easy half-day walk between the Shelburne gate (Connor Brook) and the Wild River Camp Ground in Bean's Purchase....
Crooked River
19 miles away My sister and I put in just below eddes falls this summer and kayaked all the way to sebago lake. Nice trip....My friend Dan and I ran part of this section last summer. Instead of putting in at Scribner's Mill, we launched from Edes Falls, just above the Rapids. It was a good inroduction to whitewater. Dan flipped within the first five minutes, but being that the water is relatively shallow, he did little more than get wet on a hot summers day. The Route 302 bridge is a logical pull out spot. There is a large mass of debris blocking passage of the river there. The only tricky part is that the walls of the riverband are steep and slippery, so it helps to have someone with you for the portage....

Check out the Lostbo Glades or Carter Notch for some of the finest tree skiing in the East. Whatever your ability, Black Mountain has something to offer. 'Black is almost certainly one of the best areas you've probably never skied. Even though it's been operating for 72 years, it's still a well-kept secret. Many of the trails are narrow. They twist and turn through the woods the way ski trails should. It's a very different expe... |
