There are some splendid whitewater spots on Nezinscot River - West Branch, and Poland Spring Campground is a delightful campground nearby. The high level of precipitation makes Hawkes Pond a relatively wet place; the month with most of the rain is November while September is ordinarily the driest month. This lake is so wonderful. Hawkes Pond is not far at all from Lewiston-Auburn; if you came for an overnight stay Paul and Gail's Campground is a great site to

long day outdoors Travelodge Lewiston is a splendid spot to spend a night or two, and Hawkes Pond is a nice lake close by. Not sufficient hours in a day to enjoy this spot. What would winter be without some skiing at Lost Valley,
and lakes are such peaceful spots, why not pop by Marshall Pond. This lake is so wonderful. Whitewater paddling is not for everyone but if it's for you then we recommend Nezinscot River, and enjoy a round of golf at Poland Spring
Golf Course. A wonderful close by hotel is Residence Inn Auburn, and here at Hawkes Pond you can see Hawkes Hill.

Crooked River
 | 14 miles away My sister and I put in just below eddes falls this summer and kayaked all the way to sebago lake. Nice trip....My friend Dan and I ran part of this section last summer. Instead of putting in at Scribner's Mill, we launched from Edes Falls, just above the Rapids. It was a good inroduction to whitewater. Dan flipped within the first five minutes, but being that the water is relatively shallow, he did little more than get wet on a hot summers day. The Route 302 bridge is a logical pull out spot. There is a large mass of debris blocking passage of the river there. The only tricky part is that the walls of the riverband are steep and slippery, so it helps to have someone with you for the portage.... |
Chaffin Pond
 | 15 miles away This is a nice small pond just off of 302 but you can't hear any of the busy traffic. I'd recommend LOTS of bug sprays as the mosquitoes tend to swarm and are very plentiful this year.
