West Pond
11 miles away West Pond is a truly special place, in the foothils of Mr. Washington. As you approach the pond from the South on Rt. 160, you are met by a breathtaking view of Mt. Washington which is 40 miles away. The water in west pond is crystal clear, and you can often hear the loons. There is a large area around the pond that is protected in tree growth, so the pond will never face additional stress of building. There is also no public access for boats, and that keeps it quiet and free of the kind of noise and congestion you see in popular lakes elsewhere....
Crooked River
12 miles away My sister and I put in just below eddes falls this summer and kayaked all the way to sebago lake. Nice trip....My friend Dan and I ran part of this section last summer. Instead of putting in at Scribner's Mill, we launched from Edes Falls, just above the Rapids. It was a good inroduction to whitewater. Dan flipped within the first five minutes, but being that the water is relatively shallow, he did little more than get wet on a hot summers day. The Route 302 bridge is a logical pull out spot. There is a large mass of debris blocking passage of the river there. The only tricky part is that the walls of the riverband are steep and slippery, so it helps to have someone with you for the portage....

Cranmore Mountain
26 miles away I have skied at Cranmore many times. The Mountain isn't huge, but has a good 1,200 vertical drop. There is plenty of trails for everyone, including a nice, long beginner run from the summit to the base. Cranmore has lots of steep runs too! The best thing ...
