A great nearby hotel is Eggemoggin Oceanfront Lodge, and time spent at Birchhead Shore is always good. This is no site for people who don’t like to have fun. On a splendid day at Frost Pond you can take a hike along the Blue Hill Trail, and Homestead Motel and Cottages is a delightful place to get some rest. A wonderful site for whitewater paddling near Frost Pond is Blue Hill Falls, and do take a look at Black Pond, it's a wonderful lake. day, Sunshine Campground is a splendid place to camp nearby, and swamps don’t sound that brilliant but Clapps Meadow near Frost Pond is relatively brilliant. You'll discover a gorgeous lake called John Gray Pond near Frost Pond, and
in case you don’t have a problem getting dripping wet, you can always go whitewater paddling on Narramissic River. There is a magnificent hiking trail close to Frost Pond called the Old Cove Trail; Robin Hood Camp is a magnificent
local campground. This lake is so wonderful. Near Frost Pond you locate the Sawyer Notch Trail which is a great hiking trail.

 | 19 miles away We went there in September, but, it seemed like an ideal, quiet place for hikers who may want to get off the beaten track on a very commercial island. The showers were clean, the sites were clean and it was not the most expensive. Forewarned, the shuttle bus doesn't go there, price to pay for remoteness.... |
Beech Mountain West Ridge Trail
 | 19 miles away ...pond below to the west and Mansell Mountain beyond as he/she ascends. The views tend to get better as you go higher (imagine that?), although the trail alternates between wooded and fairly open rock, meaning that the good views are sporadic.
After 6/10 of a mile you'll come to a trail intersection. The Beach Mountain Loop trail heads left (north) towards the parking area off of Beech Hill Road. You'll want to go to the right/straight, where you can make the final 1/10 of a mile push to the summit of Beech.
The last 1/10 of a mile is pretty easy going, compared to the ascent to this point. With about 100 yards to go you'll come across a small structure on your right that looks to be the former privy for the occupants of the fire tower on top of the mountain. The fire tower on top, incidentally, is abandoned and barred to entry, but you can still climb up one level to get even better views. And it only makes sense that a mountain with a fire tower on top is going to have great views, which Beech Mountain does. The hiker gets almost a 360 degree view, with the only directi... |
