Many people like to go to Desert Pond. During the warm months at Desert Pond temperatures are usually in the 70's, and all through summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. During the winter highs are regularly in the 20's with temperatures at Desert Pond dipping down into the 0's all through winter nights. Hopkins Stream is in the neighborhood of Desert Pond and is always a delight to have a look at; whitewater paddling is not for everyone but if it's for

| | you then, we recommend Sandy River. Man, is there lots of exciting stuff to do in the neighborhood of Desert Pond. The skiing at Titcomb is fine. There's so much to do here at Desert Pond that you need to camp here for a while, Camp Laurel is a good spot for that. Winthrop Motel is a tremendous place to spend a night or two, and the sight of stunning Bowen Hill is great. Here at Desert Pond you'll probably meet some folks from Augusta-Waterville. You'll need more than a day to explore everything
Desert Pond has to offer, you can camp at Five Seasons Campground. This lake is so wonderful. If you're interested in hydro structures, you can visit Taylor Pond Dam, and Desert Pond is not the only spot nearby, Hopkins Pond is
a nearby lake. There's great hiking along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail; dry warm beds await you at Maple Hill Farm B & B Inn. A lake nearby is Taylor Pond, and get your pulse rate up on the great whitewater of Cobbosseecontee Stream.

Eaton Mountain
 | 24 miles away 3 PHOTOS Eaton Mountain provides affordable and convenient skiing, snowboarding, and snowtubing to the greater Waterville/Skowhegan area. The mountain boasts a suprising variety of terrain for a compact ski area including glades, challenging steeps, and classic New England style trails. Most of the area is covered with snowmaking and is lit for nightskiiing. Equipment rentals and lessons are available. The base lodge has a snackbar and provides a place to warm up by the wood stove and meet friends. The ski area has new owners as of November 2008 and will not be operating for the 2008-09 ski season. The new owners will be taking the time to make improvements and prepare for a grand reopening in the fall of 2009. Immediate improvements are planned to include an all new snowtubing facility and widening of the Moose slope for a new terrain park. The ski area is located on Lambert Road, just off Route 2 between Skowhegan and Canaan.... |
