Conners Nubble Trail
My wife and I and our two children (including son Conor, of course) hiked up Connor's Nubble in August, 2008.  The Acadia National Park Brochure/Map identifies this little mountain as ''Connor's Nubble'' while the trail sign itself goes with ''Conner's Nubble.''  We hiked up Connor's Nubble from the south, off of the carriage road/bike trail that runs south along the west side of Eagle Lake.  The hiking trail itself from the south approach is short, on the order of 1/3 mile.  It's pretty steep, but not too challenging given its brevity.  Once on top, the hiker is rewarded with sweeping views in all directions.  The view of Eagle Lake is terrific, as is the gander at Cadillac Mountain.  This is a very rewarding hike for such a short trail, and combined with a bike ride circumnavigating Eagle Lake, it makes for a terrific 3-hour jaunt....

Sargent Mountain Trail
... However, my approach was a bit unorthodox. Instead of beginning my hike off of Routes 198/3 via the Giant Slide Trail - which leads the hiker to the northern starting point of the North Ridge Trail - I cut off the first mile of the North Ridge Trail by biking 5. 2 miles from Eagle Lake to catch the North Ridge Trail 7/10 of a mile from Sargent's summit.

I started the bike ride at the parking lot on the north side of Route 233, just north of Eagle Lake. The bike ride on this particular carriage road was rather challenging, with several fairly steep, long grades that forced me to walk the bike in a couple of places. Still, the combination of biking and hiking was very enjoyable.

Anyway, having locked my bike to a tree where the carriage road intersects the North Ridge Trail, I made the 0. 7 mile hike to the top of Sargent in about 45 minutes. The trail is moderately steep, ascending from 780 feet at the carriage road to the 1,373-foot summit in 7/10 of a mile. This trail is fairly open, offering great views to the north and northeast for nearly the entire duration. Views...

Beech Mountain West Ridge Trail
...scends immediately from the little dirt road cul-de-sac to a little stream. After this brief 50-yard descent, it's all uphill, and steep to boot. The hiker is rewarded with views towards Long pond below to the west and Mansell Mountain beyond as he/she ascends. The views tend to get better as you go higher (imagine that?), although the trail alternates between wooded and fairly open rock, meaning that the good views are sporadic.

After 6/10 of a mile you'll come to a trail intersection. The Beach Mountain Loop trail heads left (north) towards the parking area off of Beech Hill Road. You'll want to go to the right/straight, where you can make the final 1/10 of a mile push to the summit of Beech.

The last 1/10 of a mile is pretty easy going, compared to the ascent to this point. With about 100 yards to go you'll come across a small structure on your right that looks to be the former privy for the occupants of the fire tower on top of the mountain. The fire tower on top, incidentally, is abandoned and barred to entry, but you can still climb up one level to get even better...

White Birches Campground
We went there in September, but, it seemed like an ideal, quiet place for hikers who may want to get off the beaten track on a very commercial island. The showers were clean, the sites were clean and it was not the most expensive. Forewarned, the shuttle bus doesn't go there, price to pay for remoteness....
