Big Pond in fact is in the middle of a scenic outdoors paradise. On a pretty day you get a panorama of Watts Hill from Big Pond. This lake is so wonderful. Get covered with water paddling on Union River, and camping is available
at Hospitality Woods RV Park. Lakes are pleasant; Branch Lake is a lake that's next to Big Pond, and camping at The Gatherings Family Campground is always a glorious experience. A typical amount of precipitation falls here at Big
Pond; most of the rain falls all through November; February is when it's the driest. What a location this is for outdoors people. Enjoy a lazy day on the beach at Jesse Beach, and after a long day outdoors Twilite Motel is a tremendous site to spend a night or two.

Beech Mountain West Ridge Trail
 | 16 miles away ...ain. The fire tower on top, incidentally, is abandoned and barred to entry, but you can still climb up one level to get even better views. And it only makes sense that a mountain with a fire tower on top is going to have great views, which Beech Mountain does. The hiker gets almost a 360 degree view, with the only direction really blocked being to the northwest. Very impressive views of Mansell Mountain and the Western Mountain grouping of mountains is offered to the west. To the northeast you can find a good view of Echo Lake and the higher peaks of the interior of Acadia to the northeast.
All told, this hike is only 0. 7 miles from bottom to top. But, you ascend 759 feet in this 0. 7 miles, which is fairly steep. I'm a 47-year old guy in reasonable hiking shape, and an average hiking pace got me to the top in 43 minutes. The descent took 30 minutes.
In summary, Beech Mountain is a very rewarding short hike. A bit strenuous, but you'll be rewarded with very impressive views, a neat fire tower and in all likelihood, considerable solitude (I didn't come across anyone). |
White Birches Campground
 | 17 miles away We went there in September, but, it seemed like an ideal, quiet place for hikers who may want to get off the beaten track on a very commercial island. The showers were clean, the sites were clean and it was not the most expensive. Forewarned, the shuttle bus doesn't go there, price to pay for remoteness.... |
Sargent Mountain Trail
 | 19 miles away ...emporarily on a large, open ridge, giving me a much needed breather before the final 0. 15 mile push to the top.
On top, Ithe hiker will discover a very large, wide open rocky summit with commanding views in all directions. To date, this is the best view I've had in Acadia National Park. The vista over Bar Harbor is remarkable, with the group of the four Porcupine Islands being promiment. The northern portion of Eagle Lake also presents itself nicely, as does the northern reaches of Somes Sound amd the Atantic Ocean to the north. The great bulks of Cadillac Mountain and Pemetic Mountain dominate the views to the east. The view from Sargent also made it easy to spot the next three peaks on my day's hike; Gilmore, Parkman and Bald. In fact, I was able to knock off these three bare-topped, wonderful little peaks and get back to my bike in only 2. 4 miles of hiking.
I would highly recommend Sargent Mountain. There are several approaches to this mountain (the 2nd tallest in Acadia after Cadillac), and it won't take all that long from any direction. And if you have a couple o... |
Conners Nubble Trail
 | 19 miles away My wife and I and our two children (including son Conor, of course) hiked up Connor's Nubble in August, 2008. The Acadia National Park Brochure/Map identifies this little mountain as ''Connor's Nubble'' while the trail sign itself goes with ''Conner's Nubble.'' We hiked up Connor's Nubble from the south, off of the carriage road/bike trail that runs south along the west side of Eagle Lake. The hiking trail itself from the south approach is short, on the order of 1/3 mile. It's pretty steep, but not too challenging given its brevity. Once on top, the hiker is rewarded with sweeping views in all directions. The view of Eagle Lake is terrific, as is the gander at Cadillac Mountain. This is a very rewarding hike for such a short trail, and combined with a bike ride circumnavigating Eagle Lake, it makes for a terrific 3-hour jaunt.... |
