There is a delightful hiking trail near Big Machias Lake called the Round Trail, and in case you don’t mind getting soaked, you can always go whitewater paddling on Machias River. Near Big Machias Lake you come across the Fox Brook Trail which is a great hiking trail, and if you came to camp Umcolcus Sporting Camps is a fine spot to do that. After a long day outdoors       Katahdin Inn is a good location to spend a night or two, and unsurprisingly Twentymile Brook flows through this region. Big Machias Lake is a good site of typical rainfall; the wettest month of the year is mostly August, that's the one that rains the most; February is when it's the driest. Going for a hike on the Island Pond Trail is always a good adventure; Fish River is a great whitewater spot nearby. But wait, there's more to do right next door to Big                  Machias Lake. During the warm days of summer here at Big Machias Lake, high temperatures frequently get into the 70's. Through the moonlight hours it's ordinarily in the 50's.
