Do go to Walnut Pond close to Rock River, it's a beautiful lake, and if you need a place to stay Quality Inn & Suites is a wonderful choice. Super 8 Dixon is a wonderful place to get some rest. This lake is so wonderful. Here at Rock River there are plenty of people from Rochelle, and a gorgeous lake like Lost Lake is a tremendous place to go to. Gale Creek is a perfect local stream, and if you're interested in hydro structures, you can take a look at Oregon Dam. During the summer months at Rock River highs are typically in the 80's. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 60's. For the period of the wintertime the highs are mostly in the 20's with temperatures at Rock River dipping down into the 0's throughout winter nights. Large trees shape and shade the campsites. A boat launch for small boats and canoes, in the lower part of the preserve, provides access to the Pecatonica River. An interpretive booklet is available at the trail head to guide hikers along a 1 1/2 mile nature trail. An additional 8 miles of trail are available to hike at your pleasure. Campers, even on the busiest weekends, can be assured of finding a site in this remote campground, The campground is located four miles northeast of Pecatonica, offering easy access to activities at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds. The campground is open from mid April until mid November,weather permitting. There are 49 sites (4-50 amp and 45- 30 amp hookups), dump station, and horseshoe pits. No firewood may be brought into the campground as a result of the Emerald Ash Borer. Firewood can be purchased at the campground.
