Many people like to go to Pounds Lake. This lake is so wonderful. The friendly folks of Harrisburg like to hang out nearby, and the Beaver Trail offers hiking at its best. Super 8 Motel - Harrisburg is a pleasant site to get some rest. Lakes are tremendous; Grindstaff Hollow Club Lake is a lake that's near Pounds Lake. This lake is so wonderful. Just can't get enough of Pounds Lake. A cool spot to take a look at in the neighborhood of Pounds Lake is Pounds Escarpment, and Pounds Lake is a wonderful place to visit for more than one day, Double M Campground is a wonderful place to camp nearby. A lot of precipitation falls at Pounds Lake; the wettest month of the year is generally May, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month of the year is January. | |

A splendid spot near Pounds Lake is Clayton Hollow; Pounds Hollow Dam is not far at all from Pounds Lake.
If you come at the right time of year, Lusk Creek offers some great whitewater; Pounds Lake is right by the Shore to Shore
Horse Trail. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 90's to Pounds Lake. Through the moonlight hours it's usually in the 60's. All through the wintertime highs are ordinarily in the 40's, and during the dark hours in the
winter at Pounds Lake temperatures plunge to the 20's.
Pine Ridge Campground is a brilliant local campground, and do take a hike on the River to River Trail.

Berkel Lake

My grandfather Andrew James Berkel assisted in digging the lake just after the 1937 flood of Shawneetown. The digging was done with plows and 2 horses. His father also assisted in the beginning . Around 1939 a family friend by the name of Cecil Church began to assist, he brought in a Ford bucket tractor to aid in the digging process. The lake was finished somewhere in between 1940-1943. They also constructed 8- 8 by 12 plywood boats before fishing the lake.... |

Big lake is a beautiful lake surrounded by lage cypress trees. In the 1940's and 50's it was called Big Lake resot, several cabins and a lage hotel, kept full duing the season. Boat rentals and a bait shop and grocery/cafe were also here. Now there ae just a fe cabins left and the hotel is gone, but the memories are still there.... |
