This lake is so wonderful. There are plenty of people from Harrisburg here at Open Pond, and there are other spots here than Open Pond, for example Cottonwood Pond. This lake is so wonderful. Lakes are such calm spots, why not explore Lake Thunderhawk close to Open Pond, and get your heart pumping on the tremendous whitewater of Lusk Creek.
Go for a hike on the River to River Trail,

and there's whitewater on Bear Branch for all you adrenaline junkies. That right there is a heap already, but it continues; Open Pond has it all. Camping is available at Teal Pond Campground; dry warm beds await you at Super 8 Motel - Harrisburg. If you're here at Open Pond, you could check out Black Slough, and if you came for an overnight stay Redbud Campground is a good site to camp.

Buck Ridge Campground was closed in 2007 and I'm very upset to see that happen. The area is depressed and could really benefit from this wonderful campground. You can still hike in but we will miss our trips and the wonderful memories that awaited us. I'm truly upset about this loss. The park is gorgeous. I hope to see an outpouring of requests to reopen this national treasure....

Berkel Lake
19 miles away
My grandfather Andrew James Berkel assisted in digging the lake just after the 1937 flood of Shawneetown. The digging was done with plows and 2 horses. His father also assisted in the beginning . Around 1939 a family friend by the name of Cecil Church began to assist, he brought in a Ford bucket tractor to aid in the digging process. The lake was finished somewhere in between 1940-1943. They also constructed 8- 8 by 12 plywood boats before fishing the lake....
