Lake Murphysboro is not the only place close by, Snockey Pond is a close by lake, and Comfort Inn Harrisburg is a nice site to get some rest. Summertime brings highs in the 80's to Lake Murphysboro with overnight lows in the 60's. During the winter this place gets highs in the 30's; after the sun is down through the winter temperatures at Lake Murphysboro drop into the 10's. to River Trail; a pleasant site for whitewater paddling is Bear Branch. If you get bored of Lake Murphysboro, you could also stop by close by Willow Lake, and Lake Murphysboro is a glorious spot to visit for more than one day, Pine Ridge Campground is a glorious spot to camp nearby.

Berkel Lake
| My grandfather Andrew James Berkel assisted in digging the lake just after the 1937 flood of Shawneetown. The digging was done with plows and 2 horses. His father also assisted in the beginning . Around 1939 a family friend by the name of Cecil Church began to assist, he brought in a Ford bucket tractor to aid in the digging process. The lake was finished somewhere in between 1940-1943. They also constructed 8- 8 by 12 plywood boats before fishing the lake.... |

Big lake is a beautiful lake surrounded by lage cypress trees. In the 1940's and 50's it was called Big Lake resot, several cabins and a lage hotel, kept full duing the season. Boat rentals and a bait shop and grocery/cafe were also here. Now there ae just a fe cabins left and the hotel is gone, but the memories are still there.... |
