     Dongola Lake Dam is worth stopping at if you're here, and Super 8 Anna is a splendid location to get some rest. A pleasant spot to camp here at Dongola Lake is Little Grassy Lake Campground & Marina, and a glorious close by hotel is Americas Best Value Inn/Ullin. This lake is so wonderful. A lovely lake like Lence Pond next to Dongola Lake is a tremendous place to visit, and it's a splendid idea to go to Crooked Creek. If you're here at Dongola Lake and you  
   like golf, you can have a look at Union County Country Club; do stop by Morgan Pond, it's a beautiful lake.
There's just no way somebody can get bored here at Dongola Lake. Camping at Caledonia Campground is always a brilliant experience, and hiking is a popular thing to do around Dongola Lake; Opossum Trot Trail is a good local trail. Whitewater paddling is not for everybody but if it's for you then we recommend Little Grassy Creek. Summertime highs at
 
               Dongola Lake mostly tend to be in the 80's. Summer overnight lows plunge down to the 60's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Dongola Lake are in the 20's.
Dongola Lake sees pretty high levels of precipitation; the month with most of the rain is May; the driest of the months is January.

Pine Hills Campground

Pine Hills Campground is the place to go when exploring the Shawnee National Forest. Finding the campground can be difficult, but easy if you have a topographic atlas. It is located adjacent to Illinois largest wilderness complex, nothing significant on a grand scale, but a world away from the madness of Chicago at the opposite end of the state. It is between ILL routes 3 and 127 between Grand Tower and Trail of Tears state forest. I'm sorry to say I cannot share the best site in the campsround, but will probably find it yourself without much effort. It is at the back of the loop adjacent to the stream. I basically gave it away, but good hunting still! Actually, it can be difficult to find, but well worth the solitude. Good wildlife viewing in the area, especially near the LaRue Swamp area- many hawks can be seen in this perennial spring fed wetland. It is the Mississippi River Valley in a natural state- a remnant of it, at least. ...
