My grandfather Andrew James Berkel assisted in digging the lake just after the 1937 flood of Shawneetown. The digging was done with plows and 2 horses. His father also assisted in the beginning . Around 1939 a family friend by the name of Cecil Church began to assist, he brought in a Ford bucket tractor to aid in the digging process. The lake was finished somewhere in between 1940-1943. They also constructed 8- 8 by 12 plywood boats before fishing the lake.

Illinois has many beautiful lakes and Berkel Lake is one of them. This lake is so wonderful. From Berkel Lake you obtain a tremendous sight of Cave Hill. What a place this is for outdoors folks. A magnificent place to visit near Berkel Lake is Three Springs Hollow, and the Beaver Trail is a glorious hiking trail nearby. Glide down the rapids of Lusk Creek in a kayak; there are plenty of folks from Harrisburg here at Berkel Lake.

| | Lake you can take a hike along the River to River Trail, and Gold Post's Motel is a glorious site to get some rest. Swamps like Davis Slough are fun to take a look at, and after a long day outdoors Neal Motel is a perfect site to spend a night or two. This lake is so wonderful. Get yourself into a kayak and hit Bear Branch, and camping is available at Pine Ridge Campground.

Lakes; if you came for an overnight stay Double M Campground is a great spot to camp. Summertime highs at Berkel Lake mostly tend to be in the 90's, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. Through the winter highs are
in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Berkel Lake. Much precipitation falls at Berkel Lake; May is the wettest month with most rain, and January on the other hand is the driest.
