The digging was done with plows and 2 horses. His father also assisted in the beginning . Around 1939 a family friend by the name of Cecil Church began to assist, he brought in a Ford bucket tractor to aid in the digging process. The lake was finished somewhere in between 1940-1943. They also constructed 8- 8 by 12 plywood boats before fishing the lake. On a delightful day you can visit Davis Slough, a swamp in the vicinity of Berkel Lake, and on a good day you can take a hike along the Beaver Trail. While you're here at Berkel Lake, you could also stop by pretty Parker Lakes, and if the weather is nice, you can go for a hike along the River to River Trail. Three Springs Hollow is a good location to look at, and you acquire a great vista of Cave Hill from here.
