Berkel Lake, Saline County, Illinois     User input for Berkel Lake, Saline County, Illinois: Rose Berkel (Goff): My grandfather Andrew James Berkel assisted in digging the lake just after the 1937 flood of Shawneetown. The digging was done with plows and 2 horses. His father also assisted in the beginning . Around 1939 a family friend by the name of Cecil Church began to assist, he brought in a Ford bucket tractor to aid in the digging process. The lake was finished somewhere in between 1940-1943. Sure, Parker Lakes is around here; you can distinguish Cave Hill from Berkel Lake. After a long day outdoors Super 8 Motel - Harrisburg is a splendid spot to spend a night or two; Bear Branch has a glorious whitewater paddling spot close by. This lake is so wonderful. If you don’t have a problem getting dripping wet, you can always go whitewater paddling on Lusk Creek, and if you need a spot to stay Comfort Inn Harrisburg is a good choice. Snockey Pond       is a delightful lake near Berkel Lake; don't leave Berkel Lake without first going for a hike along the Beaver Trail. Thirty Four Ranch Campground is a wonderful local campground, and Three Springs Hollow is a good site to have a look at. This lake is so wonderful. Why not camp at Williams Hill Pass OHV Park since you're here at Berkel Lake, and if you like swamps you're in luck, Davis Slough is right close by. This site is excellent, just explore all                  the exciting things to do near Berkel Lake. There are great spots to explore along the River to River Trail, and while you're here you will meet lots of folks from nearby Harrisburg. Berkel Lake is a reasonably wet place frequently with lots of rainfall; May is when you get the most rain here, and January is when it's the driest. Summertime at Berkel Lake arrives with high temperatures in the 90's, and throughout the night it cools down to the 60's.
