The Dollar Creek Ridge Trail is a wonderful hiking trail close to Square Top Lake; why not camp at Poverty Flat Campground if you're here at Square Top Lake. From a precipitation point of view Square Top Lake is a reasonably common place; throughout January this area sees the most snow; July is the month with the least moisture. Top Lake during the winter regularly dip into the 10's. So much exciting stuff to do in the Salmon River Mountains, not enough time. If the weather is good here at Square Top Lake, you can go for a hike along the South Fork Blackmare

Blackmare Lake
 | The trail to Blackmare Lake is in very poor shape. The fire last year weakened the trees and the wind took down many of them. There are several 24-36' logs across the trail preventing horse travel. Hikers can make the trek, but expect to be climbing over a lot of down timber. The trails themselves are not terrible, but they are very loose with decomposed granite sand.
The other big problem with the trail is that past the signs at the first bridge, there is absolutely no direction as to where the trails will take you or how far you are along the trails. ... |

 | The trail has not been maintained. I was able to hike it easily to the top 2 or 3 years ago. Not today...It was overgrown a lot and substantial deadfall. There are some burned spots also. That said, it's beautiful and a rigorous hike. Wear pants as the twigs will scratch you, and take insect repellant. Check your body for ticks also. The lookout is cool.... |
