The Big Chief Creek Trail offers hiking at its best, and Velvet Falls Campground is a great local campground. Papoose Lakes is one of the lakes here in the Salmon River Mountains. Throughout the summertime months, highs mostly are in the 70's at Papoose Lakes with nighttime lows in the 30's. Highs throughout the wintertime are typically in the 30's; nighttime lows at Papoose Lakes through the winter typically sink into the 0's. This place is unbeatable,

Buck Lake is a great lake right next door to Papoose Lakes, and lakes are such peaceful spots, why not go to Artillery Lake. A common amount of precipitation falls here at Papoose Lakes; January is the wettest month with most snow, and the driest month of the year is July. There's tremendous hiking along the Big Baldy Ridge Trail, and glide down the rapids of Rapid River in a kayak. | |

So much entertaining stuff to do in the Salmon River Mountains, not enough time. Don't leave Papoose Lakes without first going for a hike along the Mule Hill Trail, and if you came for an overnight stay Pistol Creek Campground is
a glorious site to camp. There's no way somebody can get bored here in the Salmon River Mountains. This lake is so wonderful. Get yourself into a kayak and hit Bear Valley Creek, and you'll never forgive yourself if you don’t go skiing at Brundage Mountain since you're here.

 | 18 miles away Moderate uphill hike..couple of miles from road; classic rock wall mountain behind lake; nice place to backpack into..day trip or camp overnite; some wild life; hiked in here in summer and early spring when 1 - 2' of snow on ground (and melt was rushing down mountain side beneath snow...flowers growing in ground beneath crystal clear runoff (beneath snow...quite a site).Didn't catch any fish during August trips. Last time I was in there was the 1970's.... |
