If you come at the right time of year, Salmon River offers some magnificent whitewater; a lake close by is McWillards Lake. An average amount of precipitation falls at Packrat Lake; the month with most of the snow is January, and the driest of the months is July. But wait, there's more fun stuff to do in the Sawtooth Range. Whitewater paddling is not for everybody but if it's for you then we recommend Salmon River, and on a great day you can take a hike along the Black Warrior Creek Trail. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Sawtooth Range. Greyhawk by ResortQuest is a wonderful place to get some rest. This lake is so wonderful. at Point Campground, and Lake Kathryn is a nearby lake that you could take a look at. That right there is heaps already, but it continues; Packrat Lake has it all. If the weather is tremendous here at Packrat Lake, you can go
for a hike along the Yellow Belly Trail, and the peak of Elk Peak can be spotted from Packrat Lake. Packrat Lake is located in the Sawtooth Range. Summertime highs at Packrat Lake mostly tend to be in the 80's. Throughout the moonlight
hours it's usually in the 40's. Through the wintertime highs are usually in the 30's, and overnight lows throughout the wintertime for Packrat Lake tend to be in the 10's.

Elk Lake
 | Elk lake is approximately 12 miles from the Grandjean campground. You can not reach it by car. The trail has mild elevation gain and parallels the river during many sections. There are no designated campgrounds at elk lake however 3 spots have obvious use. Deer and elk are commonly viewed near the lake, especially in the early morning or near dusk.... |

Hell Roaring Lake
 | Hi, we (wife and I) walked into the lake the 3rd week of July 2008; we took the unmaintained road to about 200 yards from the trailhead. If you take this in lieu of the walk in, plan on a 40 minute drive to cover 5-miles; your vehicle (should be high-center 4-wd) will get scratched up from the branches adjacent to the road. The parking lot holds 6-vehicles...if you encounter another vehicle coming at you, there are very few areas where you can back into/get off the road to let the other pass; it is a 'long way' to back up on a challenging road. To get to the trail head from the parking lot, you will ford 2-branches of the river/stream (10 ? 20? across)...walk across deadfall with the aid of a walking stick...or walk thru the water...just below the knee. We walked in on a tuesday and encountered 15+ people coming/going on the path. Easy 2-mile walk, many mosquitoes...quicker coming back.... |
