Hiking along the Blue Bunch Trail is splendid fun; Newman Lake is a magnificent site to visit for more than one day, Thatcher Creek Campground  
   is a magnificent site to camp nearby. This lake is one of the great places here in the Sawtooth Range.
For the period of the warmest time of the year at Newman Lake highs are usually in the 80's while overnight lows are frequently in the 40's. Daytime highs through the wintertime are in the 30's; winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Newman Lake. There's no way anybody can get bored here in the Sawtooth Range. You can run the rapids of Marsh Creek near
 
               Newman Lake. From a precipitation point of view Newman Lake is a quite normal place; during January this area sees the most snow while July is commonly the driest month.
Going for a hike along the Camptender Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this area, and of course, this is a pleasant neighborhood for people who like lakes, Lola Lakes is a lake nearby. This lake is so wonderful. Newman Lake is right by the Bear Valley Creek Trail, and Lola Creek Campground is a glorious campground nearby. Lakes are glorious; Dutch Lake is a lake that's close to Newman Lake; Banner Creek is right next door to Newman Lake and is always a joy to stop at.

Moderate uphill hike..couple of miles from road; classic rock wall mountain behind lake; nice place to backpack into..day trip or camp overnite; some wild life; hiked in here in summer and early spring when 1 - 2' of snow on ground (and melt was rushing down mountain side beneath snow...flowers growing in ground beneath crystal clear runoff (beneath snow...quite a site).Didn't catch any fish during August trips. Last time I was in there was the 1970's....

Elk Lake

Elk lake is approximately 12 miles from the Grandjean campground. You can not reach it by car. The trail has mild elevation gain and parallels the river during many sections. There are no designated campgrounds at elk lake however 3 spots have obvious use. Deer and elk are commonly viewed near the lake, especially in the early morning or near dusk....
