     A splendid location for whitewater paddling close to Marten Lake is Salmon River - Middle Fork, and hiking is a popular thing to do around Marten Lake; Bear Valley Creek Trail is a good local trail. This lake is so wonderful. You'll come across a picturesque lake called Swamp Lake near Marten Lake, and get your heart pumping on the wonderful whitewater of Marsh Creek. High temperatures at Marten Lake throughout the warm days of summer are in the 80's. Summer  
   overnight lows plunge down to the 40's. For the period of the winter highs are commonly in the 30's, and nighttime lows at Marten Lake through the winter commonly sink into the 10's.
If only every site had this much outdoors enjoyable stuff, what a great planet it would be. Take a hike on the Camptender Trail. Marten Lake is located in the Sawtooth Range. Marten Lake gets a normal amount of rain; most of the snow falls during January; July is when it's the driest.
 
               Why not take a refreshing hike along the Blue Bunch Trail, and if you came for an overnight stay Lola Creek Campground is a fine site to camp. You definitely have to go for the Sawtooth Range. Lakes are such serene places, why not take a look at Kelly Lake right next door to Marten Lake, and why not camp at Thatcher Creek Campground while you're here at Marten Lake.

Moderate uphill hike..couple of miles from road; classic rock wall mountain behind lake; nice place to backpack into..day trip or camp overnite; some wild life; hiked in here in summer and early spring when 1 - 2' of snow on ground (and melt was rushing down mountain side beneath snow...flowers growing in ground beneath crystal clear runoff (beneath snow...quite a site).Didn't catch any fish during August trips. Last time I was in there was the 1970's....

Elk Lake

Elk lake is approximately 12 miles from the Grandjean campground. You can not reach it by car. The trail has mild elevation gain and parallels the river during many sections. There are no designated campgrounds at elk lake however 3 spots have obvious use. Deer and elk are commonly viewed near the lake, especially in the early morning or near dusk....
