Hell Roaring Lake, Sawtooth Range, Custer County, Idaho     User input for Hell Roaring Lake, Sawtooth Range, Custer County, Idaho: Chuck Weir: Hi, we (wife and I) walked into the lake the 3rd week of July 2008; we took the unmaintained road to about 200 yards from the trailhead. If you take this in lieu of the walk in, plan on a 40 minute drive to cover 5-miles; your vehicle (should be high-center 4-wd) will get scratched up from the branches adjacent to the road. The parking lot holds 6-vehicles...if you encounter another vehicle coming at you, there are very few areas where you can back into/get off the road to let the other pass; it is a 'long way' to back up on a challenging road. To get to the trail head from the parking lot, you will ford 2-branches of the river/stream (10 ? 20? across)...walk across deadfall with the aid of a walking stick...or walk thru the water...just below the knee. We walked in on a tuesday and encountered 15+ people coming/going on the path. Easy 2-mile walk, many mosquitoes...quicker coming back. For the duration of the wintertime the highs are typically in the 20's, and after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Hell Roaring Lake descend into the-10's. This lake is so wonderful. Stay the night at Heyburn Mountain Campground, and great skiing awaits you at Soldier Mountain Ski Resort. And       that's not all the things to do here in the Sawtooth Range. There's so much to do here at Hell Roaring Lake that you need to camp here for a while, Sockeye Campground is a good spot for that; if the weather is good, you can go for a hike along the Bull Moose Trail. This lake is one of the great places here in the Sawtooth Range. And that's not all you can do here at Hell Roaring Lake. Lakes are such calm places, why not have a look at Farley Lake in close                  proximity to Hell Roaring Lake. Get your heart pumping on the pleasant whitewater of Salmon River, and there are other places here than Hell Roaring Lake, for example Imogene Lake. You simply ought to have a look at Finger Of Fate if you're here at Hell Roaring Lake, and the Yellow Belly Trail is a perfect hiking trail nearby.
