Box Lake is a very beautiful lake in beautiful surroundings. If you need a site to stay AmericInn McCall is a pleasant choice, and here at Box Lake you can distinguish Beaverdam Peak. It is very dried up here at Box Lake ordinarily; most of the rain falls through May, and the driest of the months is July. On a great day at Box Lake you can take a hike along the Crestline Trail, and since you might be in a lake visiting mood you can always stop at nearby Pot Lake. Throughout the warm months highs here at Box Lake get into the 90's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's usually in the 50's. Trail is a fine hiking trail close to Box Lake, and Black Lee Campground is a delightful campground nearby.
You just can't envision the amount of outdoors amusing stuff the Salmon River Mountains has to offer. Float down the rapids of Payette River - North Fork in a kayak, and if you want to hit the beach, North Beach is around here.

The trail to Blackmare Lake is in very poor shape. The fire last year weakened the trees and the wind took down many of them. There are several 24-36' logs across the trail preventing horse travel. Hikers can make the trek, but expect to be climbing over a lot of down timber. The trails themselves are not terrible, but they are very loose with decomposed granite sand.
The other big problem with the trail is that past the signs at the first bridge, there is absolutely no direction as to where the trails will take you or how far you are along the trails. ... |

The trail has not been maintained. I was able to hike it easily to the top 2 or 3 years ago. Not today...It was overgrown a lot and substantial deadfall. There are some burned spots also. That said, it's beautiful and a rigorous hike. Wear pants as the twigs will scratch you, and take insect repellant. Check your body for ticks also. The lookout is cool.... |
