A visit to Bowknot Lake is always a good idea. Be careful coming to Bowknot Lake, you might not ever want to go home again. Why not camp at Alturas Inlet Campground since you're here at Bowknot Lake, and going for a hike along the Yuba River Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this area. | | to the national average; the wettest month of the year is regularly January, that's the one that snows the most, and July is when it's the driest. Paddling on Salmon River is so much fun; you can have a perfect hiking adventure along the Yellow Belly Trail. This lake is so wonderful. catch a sight of Parks Peak from Bowknot Lake. For the period of the warm days of summer at Bowknot Lake temperatures are usually in the 80's. For the duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures sink down into the 40's.
Through the winter this place gets highs in the 30's, and after the sun is down throughout the wintertime temperatures at Bowknot Lake dip into the 10's. And if that's not sufficient there's heaps more amusing stuff to do in the Sawtooth
Range. You could also stop at Toxaway Lake if you're here at Bowknot Lake; it's close by; why not head up to Soldier Mountain Ski Resort and strap some skis to your feet. This lake is located in the wonderful Sawtooth Range.

Hell Roaring Lake
 | Hi, we (wife and I) walked into the lake the 3rd week of July 2008; we took the unmaintained road to about 200 yards from the trailhead. If you take this in lieu of the walk in, plan on a 40 minute drive to cover 5-miles; your vehicle (should be high-center 4-wd) will get scratched up from the branches adjacent to the road. The parking lot holds 6-vehicles...if you encounter another vehicle coming at you, there are very few areas where you can back into/get off the road to let the other pass; it is a 'long way' to back up on a challenging road. To get to the trail head from the parking lot, you will ford 2-branches of the river/stream (10 ? 20? across)...walk across deadfall with the aid of a walking stick...or walk thru the water...just below the knee. We walked in on a tuesday and encountered 15+ people coming/going on the path. Easy 2-mile walk, many mosquitoes...quicker coming back.... |
Elk Lake
 | Elk lake is approximately 12 miles from the Grandjean campground. You can not reach it by car. The trail has mild elevation gain and parallels the river during many sections. There are no designated campgrounds at elk lake however 3 spots have obvious use. Deer and elk are commonly viewed near the lake, especially in the early morning or near dusk.... |
