This lake is so wonderful. Don't leave Lake Waiau without first going for a hike along the Puu Oo Volcano Trail; if you need a place to stay Inn at Kulaniapia is a fine choice. Waimea Country Lodge is a great place to get some rest. Lake Waiau gets very little precipitation; January is the month that gets the most rain; the driest month of the       year is July. Going for a hike on the Mauna Kea Umikoa Trail is always a glorious adventure; you'll meet a lot of folks from Hilo here. High temperatures at Lake Waiau through the long summer days are in the 80's with nighttime lows in the 60's.
