Hiking is a popular thing to do around Waikea Reservoir; Hilo Trail is a perfect local trail, and Kamana Springs is always fun to check out. A great beach in close proximity to Waikea Reservoir is Bakers Beach; dry warm beds await you at Hilo Seaside Hotel. The high level of precipitation makes Waikea Reservoir a reasonably wet place; during the month of March you get the most rain around here, and June       is when it's the driest. Waikea Reservoir is right next door to Kohoole Gulch which is without doubt worth a visit, and since you're here you can play some golf at Naniloa Country Club. This lake is so wonderful. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Puu Oo Volcano Trail. This place, Waikea Reservoir, it clearly has so much outdoors entertaining stuff. Beaches are magnificent; and Machida Beach in close proximity to Waikea Reservoir is no exception,                  and Alenaio Stream is one of the streams close by that might be worth stopping at. Hlai is beautiful and can be spotted from Waikea Reservoir; after a long day outdoors Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is a nice site to spend a night or two. This lake is so wonderful. Hoakimau Pond is a nearby lake that you could pop by, and there's pleasant hiking along the Maulua Trail. At Waikea Reservoir all through the warm days of summer highs are in the 80's, and all through summer nights temperatures are in the 60's.
